What is the difference between competency and capability?
Capability covers all the dimensions of Capability of which competency is just one. For example – Qualifications, Training, Experience, Knowledge & Skills that are not part of the Competency Library. Competency covers the knowedge and skills in the competency library that are defined so they can be measured on the job
What’s the difference between skills, certifications and competencies?
Skill – successfully doing an activity is only one part of competency. Certifications usually signifiy completed training – but what is learnt in training may not be applied on the job.
Competencies combine knowledge, skill, and context – the application of knowledge and skill appropriately on the job. We focus on demonstrated ability—not just knowledge or certification.

How are competencies assessed
Competencies can be assessed by observation – by managers, experts, mentors, preceptors in healthcare. Assessment does not have to be just a rating, you can include validation methods – such as skills demonstration, peer report and evidence file uploads. Knowledge can be assessed by competency linked multi choice question tests that are automatically scored, uppdating individual competency levels and gaps.
Competency is often inferred from attendance of training courses – but this does not guarantee the competency will be demonstrated on the job.

For supervisors and managers the skills matrix is a dashboard that shows the real time position of competency levels and gaps for their team.
The team capability reports shows the current position aof the team against all capability requirements including qualifications, experience, training and competency. Capability Search enables identification of staff with particular skills and those who best match all the capability requirements for a particular role.
